What does it mean when their is oil half way up your dipstick?

I just purchased a 1993 Plymouth Acclaim - only paid $350. I checked the oil, and there is oil about half way up the dip stick! I've never seen anything like this, but perhaps because most of my cars have been Japanese cars. Is this normal or could there be something wrong?
